Ideal for the younger adventurer, the itinerary of this safari is based on the original participation camping safari through Botswana. Starting and finishing in Johannesburg, the route encompasses the highlights of Botswana as it explores the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, the Okavango Delta, Moremi, Savute and Chobe.
DAY 1: JOHANNESBURG
Meet your safari guide at the Hotel for a comprehensive safari briefing. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight.
DAY 2: NATA SANCTUARY
Fly from Jo'burg to Maun and head for Nata Sanctuary. Overnight camping is at Nata Sanctuary. We visit the ancient lake bed of the Makgadikgadi Pans and, depending on the time of year, we may see the thousands of flamingos and other waterfowl that congregate there.
DAYS 3 & 4: NXAI PAN
We head for Nxai Pan which was once an ancient lake bed and is now a grass pan dotted with small islands of trees. During the summer months game viewing can be quite prolific on the pan. We spend two nights camping at Nxai Pan.
DAY 5: MAUN
Departing Nxai Pan, we head westwards for Maun - gateway to the famous wildlife areas of Botswana. We spend the night in Maun at Riley’s Hotel on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.
DAYS 6 & 7: OKAVANGO DELTA
We transfer by light aircraft into the heart of the unique Okavango Delta, which we explore by mokoro (dugout canoe) and powerboat for some of the best bird viewing anywhere, and undertake game viewing walks on the islands. Our nights are spent around the campfire, camping at our Afro Ventures site in a private concession area, with resident camp staff.
DAYS 8 & 9: MOREMI WILDLIFE RESERVE
After our return flight to Maun we negotiate the sandy tracks to Moremi - tucked into the north-eastern sector of the Okavango. The reserve was set aside in 1963 by the Batawana tribe, and is rated as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Our days are spent on extensive game viewing drives. We spend two nights camping in Moremi Wildlife Reserve.
DAYS 10, 11, 12 & 13: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
We travel up to Savute and spend two nights camping next to the dry Savute Channel. During the autumn months huge animal concentrations are attracted to this area, and Savute is excellent for lion and other predator viewing. From Savute we move up to northern Chobe and camp for two nights at Serondela on the Chobe River. This is the heart of elephant country and here we have an opportunity to spend many hours watching the huge herds in and around the waters of the Chobe River. Northern Chobe has beautiful scenery and magnificent sunsets, with a large variety of bird and animal life. At certain times of the year we may overnight at different areas of Chobe National Park. Camping is in Chobe National Park.
DAY 14: JOHANNESBURG
After breakfast, we leave Serondela and the Chobe National Park to depart for Jo'burg.
